Meet the real-life piano playing tabby cat that has been inspiring the world through music since 2007.
Nora gained international prominence after a YouTube video of her playing the piano went viral in 2007. Since then, Nora’s combined YouTube videos have garnered more than 40 million views. Nora has been featured on BBC Earth, 6ABC Action News, Today, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Hong Kong’s My Pet magazine, National Geographic, and more.
As a kitten, Nora was rescued from the streets of Camden, New Jersey and placed for adoption by Furrever Friends. She was adopted by Philadelphia musicians and artists Betsy Alexander and Burnell Yow. When she was a year old, Nora climbed onto Betsy’s piano bench and began to play.
Nora owes her life to the volunteers at Furrever Friends Rescue and Volunteers, Inc. (FFRV), an all-volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that strives to save the lives of homeless animals. Furrever Friends operates entirely on donations from caring individuals like you. We encourage Nora’s fans to make a donation to Furrever Friends in Nora’s name.
CATcerto was the brainchild of Lithuanian conductor, composer and artist Mindaugas Piečaitis. Mr. Piečaitis contacted Burnell & Betsy about his idea to write a concerto inspired by Nora’s playing after he watched my videos on YouTube.
Premiered by the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra in Lithuania on June 5th, 2009, with Mr. Piečaitis conducting, Nora appeared as the guest soloist through pre-recorded video.
Published by Peters Publishing, CATcerto has captivated audiences worldwide and earned a Guinness World Records award in 2010 as the first concerto composed for a cat.
CATcerto will be performed at the upcoming National Music Festival in Chestertown, Maryland on June 15th, 2024. Visit the NationalMusic.us to learn more.
Nora sadly passed away on the morning of Monday, February 5th, 2024. She was 19 1/2 years old. She passed peacefully at home on her favorite blanket and surrounded by Betsy and Burnell, who loved her dearly.
We are so grateful to have had nearly 20 years with this beautiful and talented feline. She brought us so much joy, and through her we met so many wonderful folks. Over the years, Nora received thousands of messages of love from you, her fans and admirers. We thank you all.
-Betsy & Burnell
